True, I've never noticed an issue assigning meaningful tactical calls. I guess its just the actual call that is limited in size. In any case if the call is too long Xastir will not replay the log file.

BTW, I think Xastir isn't parsing for 9 chars, it's parsing for 6 on the left of the dash and 2 on the right. Meaning you can't use a 9 character word like "EMERGCNTR" or "BIKECHASR" because it isn't an FAA legal call sign.

Xastir supports tactical callsigns though, doesn't it? You should be able to tell Xastir that, say, WA0TJT-nn = "BIKECHASR", which is what will get displayed.
