I have both curl and wget installed here (via macports). Configure
recognizes both but says it will use curl instead of wget.

Yea, you need one or the other. Does Curl have a devel package?
Libcurl is better for our purposes than wget, but either should
work.
It's odd that Xastir lists libcurl in the Help->About, but doesn't
seem to find it when it needs it.
wget is installed, but it can't find that either. Argh.
You'll need to do the "./configure;make;make install" bit again to
have Xastir pick them up.
