I think we may be overdramatic here. Skin is still very useful and navigable 
even with user UI settings reset. We are basically talking about losing custom 
backgrounds and need to re-assign favorite links to home page. Not that big of 
a deal, really.

Furthermore, with XML based configuration of home links and filters on the way, 
both of the above will be saved and kept. Even better, it will be consistent 
experience for users even when they switch skins.

Regarding auto updates, most non-geek users are happy being fed with those 
keeping their system up to date and bug free as posible. They seldom take part 
in XBMC forums and mostly only when something breaks. Sure, with 100MB skins 
that update on daily basis this could be somewhat inconvenient but user can 
easily switch to other one or turn updates off if this bothers him.
