It is interesting to note that with the "generic popup"
xboard seems to be moving in the  direction of wxWidgets.

wxWidgets is a GUI front end with many
different toolkit backends (a.o. GTK, Win32, OS X). The
generic popup seems to have a similar goal.

Note that is just an observation. I am not advocating the
use of wxWindows here.
