TRAIL CONDITIONS


Updated: February 14, 2002


Current conditions: Temperatures high near 40(+) Thursday, 32 Friday and warming again over the weekend to high 30s to 40+.

Rain turning to snow on Monday into Tuesday next week.

NOTE:  Not many new reports have come in due to the stagnant snow situation and harshening trail conditions.  All reports are current as of 2/14, 8:00AM unless otherwise noted.  Consult www.norwiski.com for more current updates as there will be no revisions to this week's Trail Mail report until next week when I return from watching some ski races in Utah.  RB

ABR TRAILS
Ironwood, MI

(2/13) - The snow is holding up well with great conditions even though the south has been warm.Conditions: Excellent with an inch or 2 of new snow. All trails regroomed and retracked Wed. morning. Base: 9-14 honest inches. .

AFTERHOURS CROSS COUNTRY SKI TRAIL/BRULE RIVER STATE FOREST

Brule, WI
As of Friday Feb. 8th the trail remains in fair classic condition and good skating condition. There are spots where the tracks have melted through and just a couple thin spots on the skating lane. The trail varies from soft to perfect to icy depending on the trail's orentation and exposure. We will be re-conditioning the trail Friday night after it cools down and heavy snow is forecast for the weekend. This should yield very good to excellent conditions by Sunday.cools down we will screen roll and ginzu and should have better conditions over the weekend.

AMERICAN BIRKEBEINER TRAIL

During the final days before the race all efforts are being directed at course preparation for race day. Course conditions are very good north of "OO" and  good south of "OO". Daytime temperatures have not
been softening the snow, and some areas of the trail  are icy. Some portions of the trail have branches and debris on the course due to strong winds earlier this  week. A work crew will be removing the debris from
trail prior to race day.

BLUE HILLS TRAIL
Bruce, WI

Brilliant sunshine and southerly breezes pushed temperatures into the upper thirties today (February 6), but the base remained firm and conditionsremained fair to very good at midday skating packed powder and hardpack Sun-exposed areas became sticky by late morning. Due to occasional areas with thin base cover, it is still wise to use your rock skis until you learn the trail sections with the best snow cover. Grooming was last performed Sunday, Feb. 3 when the entire trail system was rolled again and the striding lane was extended to include the WestSideTrail.

Packed 1/31/02, not enough snow to set track in. Conditions: Fair to good. Trail has been skied on, so there is a skied-in rack, but not a lot of snow yet.

Trail conditions are still poor and the. base is still not sufficient for grooming or tracking. The short trail is packed but not tracked, bare spots are visible. Long trail has not been groomed at all due to lack of snow.

Groomed 1/31/02, track set on 2 km, 4 km, 16 km loops, but not between the 4 and 16.
Conditions: Good on 50% of the trails, fair to poor on the rest. There are still many rocks protruding through the scant snow cover, especially on hills and where tree cover is thick.

TELEMARK SKI TRAILS

2/13 - Trails are in fair to very good condition. Tracks are thin in some sections but very good in many sections. Because of high winds the past several days there is debris (branches and large pieces of bark, leaves and pine needles) scattered throughout the trails. The Telemark staff is out clearing the trails at this time.
Trail passes will be half price if you are willing to help pick-up sticks during some of your ski..

TIMBERLAND HILLS SKI TRAILS
Cumberland, WI

The entire system was packed and tracked on 2-1 following 2" of fresh snow. Most of the trail is in good condition, with a few rough spots remaining. Skiing is improving and is no longer icy.

TIMM'S HILL/HIGHPOINT SKI TRAILS

Ogema, WI
Conditions: Fair to poor but skiable; groomed and tracked Feb. 2 & Feb. 9; lighted night skiing is available on Wednesday and Saturday or for groups upon request.

TOMAHAWK LAKE SKI TRAIL
Barnes, WI

Groomed and track set Monday, Feb. 4. Limited base and underlying crust prevented a full depth track set on about 50% of the trail. Exposed needles mixed with snow on only a couple very short segments. Segments with full track set are in excellent condition. Forecasted warm temperatures mid week may deteriorate the trail.
