I did the Noquemanon and have scheduled time to do the Bear Chase as well. I am not criticizing the course or the grooming at the Birkie, only the fact that many of us were pretty well bonked at 45 k. It would not have been that big of a deal to even announce at the start that the race was 47 k. For an average citizen racer like me, lacking in a prerace strategy, my only goal is to always try to leave a little bit for the last couple k so I can finish strong. Unfortunately, after expending all my energy this left me with nothing at the bottom of a hill with a 45 k sign. Just as imporant as a good course is quality information in a race. I have nothing bad to say about the Noquemanon becuase even though the conditions left something to be desired, orgainzers were kind enough to recommend rock skis before the race, and I complied. This really saved me from tearing up my brand new RCS's and I look back on this years Noque as one of the funnest racing adventures that I have experienced. Expectations play an integral part in judging wheter an event was good or bad. I expected rain and a slow 45 k course (or maybe a cancelled birkie). I recieved a warm, dry day on a 47 k course. So when I look back on this year's Birkie I will have fond memories of how it was almost cancelled and then a snowstorm came, how it was supposed to rain race day but turned out to be a nice day, and how while organizers worked hard to produce a beautiful course, I ended up at the bottom of a hill with 2k to go when I thought I was finished.

Also, you should know that the course was in fantastic shape considering how late the snow arrived, the warm temps and rain, especially when contrasted with the Noquemanon this year. The good folks in Marquette did what they could but they just didn't have adequate snow at that time to make as uniformly nice of a course as this past Birkie ended up being. Finally, you all have a chance to do at once more decent race this year -- The Bear Chase, a week from this Sunday in Calumet, MI. We've done it many times. It is much, much easier than the Birkie and a nice season closer for many of us. The only complain of some is that it is not a point to point race but rather two loops for the folks doing the full 50K. Still, worth the drive and I think they have been receiving much lake effect snow lately so conditions should be good. With the lack of snow, what is an extra 1.7K. I think we should thank the foundation for their efforts NOT nit pick (one man's opinion). ----- Original Message ----- From: "Erik Johnson" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Wednesday, February 27, 2002 9:08 AM Subject: RE: [XC] 46.7km Birkie > It did not help that the 45 k sign was at the bottom of a hill. > > -----Original Message----- > From: Rudolph, Stuart E [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] > Sent: Wednesday, February 27, 2002 9:04 AM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: RE: [XC] 46.7km Birkie > > > Scott, > > I was similarly disappointed and only figured it out when I came to the 45K > sign and could hear that the finish line announcer was still way in the > distance.
