I didn't make the meeting yesterday so I'd really appreciate an
update on the club's position on a proposal to increase XC skiing
fees at Dane County Parks. I will no doubt attend the meeting
tomorrow because of another issue so it might be helpful to know
if the club has an official position.
I will report back to this list what I hear at the meeting. In
the meantime, feel free to share your views on this list. At the
moment I don't feel compelled to speak on this issue. However,
my own view is that we would be better off if Dane County groomed
less often especially at Indian Lake. Typically the classical
skiing at Indian Lake is spectacular until it is groomed. After
which it is merely adequate.
If I were in charge of the Dane County grooming policy, I might
or might not raise fees but here are the changes I would suggest
on day one:
Indian Lake: follow the policy used at Blue Mound State Park --
alternatively -- groom less often (only when there is a good
likelihood that there will be enough snow to set tracks within
the week).
Stewart Park: groom for skating (Blue Mounds is nearby and it is
groomed for classic skiing only when there is enough snow to set
tracks)
I would have to revisit the remaining sites but it seems like
there is room to groom for both skating and striding at Token
Creek, Lake Farm, and Cam Rock.
Such changes would easily justify an increase in fees, IMHO.
