Thanks! I went with option 1 and added a line to the postinstall file to copy the .ko file out into the kernel drivers directory. It seems like the driver then makes it into the initrd regardless of if I actually include my driver in the -n line or not.

Is there a difference in the behavior I should be seeing by using the -n flag? I actually ran a recursive diff between an extracted initrd where I listed the driver with -n and without, and there were no differences.

Just trying to understand this functionality a bit better :-)

Where does xCAT look for the "replacement" drivers? If you specify, for example, "genimage -n foobar", where would one then place the foobar driver for xCAT to pick it up and place it in the image for you?

    I was speaking more towards adding drivers to a stateless image, for example an updated tg3 nic driver.

    You can of course just unpack the initrd, manually add the .ko file in, and repack it, however I was wondering if there is a better supported way to have xcat automate this piece.

      Hi all,

      What is the proper "xcat-supported" way of adding extra kernel modules
      into a stateless Linux image? I have found some fairly old docs stating
      to copy them to /opt/xcat/share/xcat/netboot/$OS, list them in the
      genimage "-n" option, and xcat will pick it up and copy it into the
      image/initrd for you, but I have been unsuccessful in getting that to
      work with my 2.6 setup.
