xCAT does not support to set installnic attribute to a real mac address.
Use 'mac' key word is recommended.

Another thing to try, still keeping interface unset as you have it now:
   chdef node1 installnic=mac primarynic=mac

That is the explicit text string 'mac'.  I'm not sure what xCAT tries to do
when you have those attrs set to actual mac values.

Also, after running nodeset, first
   tail /var/log/messages

I noticed that for me, I was not getting all nodeset error msgs displayed
to the screen for some reason, but they were getting posted to syslog.

      out the interface attribute for  node1. Then do nodeset again and
