I'd be surprised if it didn't work. However, I personally have been inclined to roll with UEFI boot when available anyway.
I wonder about what hard drive setup was. Wondering if there was something particularly esoteric going on that efibootmgr could overcome (by being specific about GPT UUID) that legacy would have been harder to deal with...
