Good luck getting every source control engine and client to adopt your new format. ;-) Developers are used to having a huge ecosystem of tools that work with line-oriented plain-text files. This was one of the major innovations and building blocks of Unix from the beginning. That’s a major reason why almost no one has ever used anything but human-readable plain text for source files. —Jens
