I share your emotion. However, we have all been in situations where
we have had to change or alter a task in the cockpit. Whether
because the pilot changes his plans, discovers a mistake, or is
rushed at takeoff and forgets to enter the correct task, etc. Given
the high stress, reduced concentration on flying, and increased
danger of collision etc, we should carefully consider the design for
in-flight task modification. I can think of a couple of strategies:

1) completely lock down the task after takeoff. If you need to
change it, tough luck. Get out the sectional and Fly the ship or land.
2) program a electromagnetic pulse into XCSoar that will disable any
towplane or winch if there is no task entered into the system prior
to takeoff ; )
3) make it quick and intuitive to change a task so that given an
already risky situation, the risk is reduced. This approach has many
considerations; for example, it might be safer to use the main task
editor so pilots don't have to learn two different ways to modify
tasks. I'm just brainstorming here.

It would be helpful to have pilot information about the following thoughts:
*** What circumstances lead to a pilot having to alter one or more
turnpoints in a Racing, AAT, or FAI task?
*** What types of changes most frequently are made in-flight to
Racing, AAT, or FAI tasks?

The LK8000 has multiple easy-to-use designs. One of the issues I
have with the LK design is that there are special "invisible" places
to click that I do not understand. I think both programs would
benefit from a help system for gestures, clicks and long clicks on the map.
