After the enthusiasm here, I decided to give the Dell Streak 5 a try. I picked
one up off Craigslist for US$ 220 (they go for about $240 on eBay with 16GB).
It's ridiculously over-featured for use as a gliding GPS, but hey, who knows
what XCSoar will be able to do one day (compass? accelerometer? "I'm OK"
messages and tracking via data downlink - coming in 6.2?)

For those who care, I took a series of high-quality side-by-side comparison
shots of the HP iPAQ 310, the Dell Streak 5 and the Apple iPhone 4, at various
angles of sunlight, and in the cockpit.

Note that I haven't had huge issues reading the iPAQ screen in flight (apart
from smaller symbols), but the Streak is clearly much, much better. It's not
so much about brightness than about contrast, I think. The black info boxes
show that there is more reflection over dark screen portions, so I'll have to
play with that once I'm in the air (it wasn't soarable today). Don't wear
polarized sunglasses - turning the iPAQ 90 degrees (or your head) may be
required in that case. But those sunglasses aren't recommended anyway.

I've noticed a lot of small niceties about the Streak compared to the iPAQ -
such as much faster startups (XCSoar and boot), much better battery life,
simpler, reliable charging (1Amp USB source plus cable needed), simple
application installs if and only if a Wifi or 3G signal is available, and more
reliable hookup as USB storage device to my Mac. Also, XCSoar on the Streak
never fails to recognize my double-taps unlike the iPAQ (and it's got a menu
button anyway).
