Here is an example when it is important to have instantaneous HW/TW, which is a
common scenario where I fly:
You going on a 70 miles final glide from 10,000 feet AGL with 10 knots tail
wind. You achieving good glide thanks to the head wind and speed up. However
half way through your glide you enter marine air and now you have 10 knots head
wind, but since you didn't make any turn or change of heading, XCSoar or 302
will not know how to correct the wind calculation and will often continue
showing the erroneous tail wind. By the time you realize you are flying into
headwind you are too low and end up landing in a field half a mile short of the
runway. Having an instantaneous HW/TW based on TAS-GS will tell you in time
when the wind changes so you can make the correct decisions.
