Dan, sounds like you might have the Space Shuttle polar selected.
I haven't experienced any of these issues on 6.3 with a Dell Streak. If I
recall correctly in the Cambridge waypoint format the home airfield has an
H in the column that specifies the waypoint type.
One interesting thing I noticed on a recent flight was that when I didn't
select a waypoint, the default was to return me to "takeoff." In one case,
I launched in Simulator mode and noticed this on tow. Thankfully, flying
a Duo I was able to hand control over to the back seater and restart in FLY
mode. It immediately recorded Takeoff. Later in the day on final glide I
was loosing ground on my arrival height, but clearly was going to make it
and be quite high. As my arrival went negative I realized that the default
behavior was to "takeoff" which had been 1500agl or so.
I would also recommend adding an info box for GPS height and AGL Height to
some screen and then double check those on your next flight to make sure
they are generally in agreement with your altimeter and actual AGL height.
Just in case you've got bad map data. Seems like that could exhibit the
behavior that you've reported.
