One of the advantages of Kickstarter, is that you get nothing if you don't get 
enough. This is good if you want to start a commercial project. It also has a 
deadline, so new users can't contribute. For us I would have though donations 
via paypal would be just as suitable. On the other hand, if there was a 
specific thing we needed (e.g. we needed a specific bit of hardware) then it 
might be worth it, because we would know the cost in advance.
