Hi All

I hope this is the correct forum to discuss "Skylines".

I have been playing with the "live tracking" feature to log from XCSoar
directly onto the website. It was simple to set up and the results are
quite impressive.

I realise that this project is still in the developement stage, but I
have some questions, comments and suggestions:

1) I logged a few test "flights" driving around with my Dell and I am
tempted to try logging some cycling too. I can see from the logs on the
site that I am not the only person to do this - obviously we want to
test these systems before we go flying. Perhaps we should have a
separate page for "test logs" so that the main page can be reserved for
real flights?

2) I notice that the logs "expire" and disappear from the website after
some hours. One of the main applications for live tracking is a tool for
"search and rescue" should a glider become over due.

- When do flight log expire?
- What happens to the expired logs - are they just deleted or are they
archived somewhere?
- What happens if we have a real search and rescue situation, how can we
get access to an archive of an expired flight?
- Could we have some way of "posting" a live track log from the live
tracking page to the normal flight log page where uploaded flight logs
are listed?

3) I cant see any means of downloading an IGC or similar file from the
live log page. If a glider were in an accident, and a live log was
available for the period immediately before the accident, then the
investigators would be able to learn a lot more from an IGC file than
they could from a screen dump of the live logging page.

4) What happens if the glider looses GPRS communications for a portion
of the flight, but later re-establishes the link. Does XCSoar "buffer"
the track data and dowload the history for the entire missing period
onto the logging site, or will the live trace have a gap with missing
fixes? The traces I have looked at seem to be complete, but maybe they
have just been for flights that stayed within GPRS range.

Notwithstanding the limitations of GPRS coverage, This looks like a very
exciting project!
