Hi Adam,

First idea :
the MAX323 board uses a MAX3232 IC. This IC doesn't respect exactly the RS232
voltage (+12v, -12v), but only +5v, -5v (See the attached datasheet). Maybe,
this is not enough for the GPSnav which is supplied with 12v.
If you have an oscilloscope, you can see on pin 2 & 3 of DB9 if the GPSnav
exchanges with IOIO.

Second idea :
the IOIO is driven by XCsoar, if your configuration isn't good (UART0, 4800bds,
...) the GPSnav can't exchange with IOIO.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I've tried swapping both the TX/RX
in the cable (GPS-NAV - MAX323) and between the IOIO board and
MAX323, and every combination of the above.

Jacques, you're right the picture was taken during one of the the
'reversed' tests, I have since returned it to its 'default'
position. Datasheet is attached, but reading it is beyond me.

As for tracing voltages, with no power to the IOIO board and the
GPS-NAV plugged in, both the 3 and 4 pins on the IOIO board are
receiving a current from the MAX323, not sure what this is all
about, I would expect only the IOIO in pin to be receiving anything,
especially given that the MAX323 board isn't even powered... But
then my knowledge of this stuff isn't great (as you've probably
    guessed).

The HelloIOIO program works fine, but I might try updating the IOIO
    to the latest firmware next.

Hopefully I'll have a chance to try another MAX323 board to check
that this isn't causing my grief in the next day or so.

Thanks again to all who have helped,

    Adam

        Hi Adam,

I looked at the picture, you have to swap the blue wire and the
yellow wire between IOIO and MAX 323 :

        IOIO 3 => Tx MAX 323

        IOIO 4 => Rx MAX 323

        > I've tried swapping the TX/RX over.

Where ? Between GPS Nav and MAX323 or between MAX323 and IOIO ?

The rule is Tx of a device to RX of the other one.

What about the Xcsoar's configuration ?

Have you the datasheet of the MAX323 module ?

          Subject: [Xcsoar-user] IOIO Problems...

          Hi All,

I've just put together my IOIO board, with MAX323 etc, and I'm
          not getting anything from it.

Attached is a picture of the finished (ish) product, the IOIO
board talks to the phone (SGS2 - until the Streak arrives)
fine (hello IOIO works fine). I am trying to test it by
plugging the DB9 into by GPS-NAV via a standard serial cable.
I have tested voltage at various points on both the MAX323
board and the IOIO and that seems to be working ok, and I've
tried swapping the TX/RX over. There is a better quality (but
          larger) pic here http://www.adam-webb.com/website/ioio2.jpg.

The only suspision I have is the MAX323 board was different to
most pictures which I have seen on various sites/emails. The
          board looks something like this
http://i.ebayimg.com/t/RS232-Serial-TTL-Converter-Module-MAX3232-MAX232-/00/s/Mzg4WDUwMA==/$(KGrHqFHJEIE915gDK!pBPhpQE2hy!~~60_35.JPG,
and I have removed the 'jumper' style connections to make
things a bit tidier, and wired the IOIO board onto the bottom
(right in the above pic) set of points.

Can anyone give me either a hint at what my problem might be,
or a way to test out various points?

          Cheers

             Adam
