Thanks everyone for your help- I used a different MAX232 card (as it turned out a much cheaper, $3 from ebay one) and all is working. It did require the rx/tx->ioio wires reversed, and a 'straight through' serial cable, but it is now all working fine (on my kitchen table). Will test 'in anger' tomorrow!
