Hi Robert,
I think your best bet is going to be an Android tablet for many reasons.
Generally they will have a few advantages over Car GPS style devices (PNAs)
such as:
> High resolution screens (1920x1080 etc, same as your TV)
> Much higher technical specs (ram, cpu, storage etc)
> More connectivity options for external devices (bluetooth, wi-fi,
cellular, IOIO board etc)
> Touch screens are capacitive rather than resistive
> Large availability of accessories, such as mounting kits, cases, screen
protectors etc

install

I've been running XCSoar on a Nexus 7 Tablet (second gen). I've got nothing
but good things to say about it. No issues with visibility. It's seen two
Australian nationals without any problems. I know of other club members who
use them, and i'm not aware of any problems.
Not sure i'd be confident running for 6 hours on internal battery, i doubt
there would be too many devices out there with enough battery when you are
running a GPS / display on full brightness. As they take 5v via USB,
attaching an external USB battery pack is simple enough.
