Hi Vincent > What we need is publicity (being more than just another SF project) and good > tools (bug tracking system, release management, tasks,...).
On Jakarta you will get "Visibility" but not "Publicity". The difference is that visibility means you are seen by many developers, publicity is when are made public in an article, presentation, book etc. which aren't always developers. > Apart from Jakarta what could be the other solutions ? OpenSymphony, JBoss, > Tigris. > AFAIK, JBoss is the only really independant structure, but they are not > really playing in the "tools" market. Through JBoss you get a lot of visibility throught the new JBoss 3.0 docu, usage internally for testing and code generation (JSR-77 MEJB) etc. Beside the JBoss part of XDoclet we are not considering bringing XDoclet under JBoss umbrella because it is not a part of JBoss. So we use it as a tool like Xalan etc. This means that won't change even XDoclet moves to Jakarta. > At same level of gain in publicity (for the product, hehe) and because > independance is more important to me, if somebody can point another Open > Source Java Tools Network, my vote will go to this one before Jakarta. > Since there is none today, my vote goes to Jakarta. I can tell you that you get more publicity than you think. With every download of JBoss 3 there is XDoclet included. Sue Spielmann and myself are talking about XDoclet on various presentations (see http://www.completeprogrammer.net/). And that is only what I know. BTW Sue did this w/o introducing XDoclet to her beforehand. Based on my experience with JBoss the more difficult way is maybe the better way. Try to gain publicity on your own and not through leaning on a cluttered group of projects like Jakarta. A good idea is to have your own web-site, try to get feedback from users, publish it, provide more and more advanced examples etc. This is more effective and will help to brand the name. Then you get publicity nearly for free.
