I think you are over-reacting. Just last month we've made a change to XNI that might have broken some users (the dynamic removal of DTD validator). For this release, you are proposing to add new methods to the XMLComponent -- a change that will break XNI users. So lets face it - XNI is not cast in stone. Xerces developers should be able to change XNI, but should try to give users some time to migrate their code.
