Did you try configuring with xf86cfg -textmode? I've got here FreeBSD with i815 configured exactly so.

But! Recently I've noticed a problem in config produced by xf86cfg (that from 4.2.0/4.2.1): it "forgets" (not always perhaps?) to insert line 'load "freetype"' in section "Module".
