You need to make sure that XFS the font server is running (usually started
by init scripts), or that you have at least the first of these three
lines (preferably all three if your font server isn't working) in your
XF86Config in the "Files" Section:
FontPath "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc/:unscaled"
FontPath "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/:unscaled"
FontPath "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/:unscaled"
