Interesting hint! However this is only possible with some problems, too. To avoid the external display from being driven with 1400 virtual (instead of 1280 which is the physical) I am forced to remove the 1400 mode from the config. In this case xrandr cannot change to 1400 of course. And the other way round: If I leave the 1400 mode in the config, the external display starts with 1400 virtual and I can switch back to 1280 with xrandr. Unfortunately, not all apps recognize this, especially the KDE taskbar does not and therefore remains half invisible and unreachable outside the new 1280 resolution... :-/ Thanks anyhow.
