Exactly.

If the 1400 mode is present, it is used as virtual and the external
panel is driven with 1280 physical (allright) but 1400 virtual (dooh!).

If I remove it, everything is fine for the external display but of
course, the internal panel cannot be used with its 1400 native
resolution anymore... :-(

As you said! The internal display is of course always connected in a
notebook. And it is recognized and its capabilities are used in the
calculations for the screen resolution, although it is of course
deactivated since the notebook is docked and its lid is closed.

And it is even not desirable to completely prevent 1400 as I need it for
the internal panel when the notebook is used on its own without the
external display. :-(

(A workaround for me would be to write a script that changes XF86Config
depending on signs that indicate a docked notebook, but that is of
course not as practical as the old XFree 4.2 behavior, driving each
display with its maximum physical resolution without using a virtual
one.)

The old driver is no option. I thank you all for the working PanelOff
option since the internal panel was active and alight with XFree 4.2
ALTHOUGH the notebook was docked and the lid CLOSED for three months now
since I have this notebook!
