For scaling, if you have a good and quite recent video chip, xv is probably
what you're looking for as you'll get all games in fullscreen by using
hardware scaling (less cpu intensive).
I really missed OpenGL (xgl) fullscreen mode when switching from a GeForce
2MX (with NVidia's binary drivers) to an SiS onboard chipset that didn't
have accelerated drivers for Linux... but it does support xv, and I'm now
*very* happy with that since all games are now playable in fullscreen and
fast enough for me (e.g. all mslug and street fighters, even the latest run
fine).
