Hi Paul,
A lot of your question depends on how the VAN is implemented (public or private).
In regards to internet traffic, you would of course need an Internet Service Provider,
unless you can deal with a NSP yourself. The internet uses the TCP/IP standard when
sending messages back and forth.
In regards to MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions), this is an internet
electonic mail standard which defines ways to put information other than text into
both the message body and the message header. There are many MIME extensions.
If your applications are sending email messages (with attachments) then the MIME
standard is in place. Last time I counted there were about eight specific email
standards (POP,IMAP,SMTP,RFC,MIME,Binhex...to name a few).
If I read your question correctly, ebXML does not have anything to do with the
electronic delivery of messages at this level.
