And they will mutate into something that will face direct competition from 
the likes of Ariba & CommerceOne.    It's funny,  all these new dot com's 
came out,  got into business spaces they really didn't understand 
(retailing for example),  now they are dying because while they understood 
WEB technology,  they didn't understand the underlying business models they 
were webifying.    The same thing could hold true for VANs vs. e-commerce 
portals,  it's really way more about understanding the business of the 
partners than it is about understanding WEB technology in general.    I 
think VANs that quickly retrofit their technology underpinnings to support 
XML and the Internet along side of EDI and their VAN,  then go out and 
continue to serve their existing customers as before,  will do just 
fine.  It's the likes of CommerceOne and Ariba that might face the same 
fate that Amozon.com faces today.
