Ken,

I beg to differ with your opinion about what constitutes a proprietary
schema vs a "standard". In the world of standards, the label standard is
typically reserved for those that have been approved by a recognized
standards development organization, most often accredited or sanctioned by
one of several organizations, such as ANSI, ISO, UN/CEFACT, and so on. This
would also include the IETF RFC's.

Using your argument, then one could say that an XML syntax developed or
defined by Microsoft, for example, that was NOT an approved W3C
Recommendation, which XML V1.0 is, would also be a standard in your mind.

Just because Microsoft has "hundreds" of schemas in its Biztalk registry
does not ipso facto make them a standard. Rather than are proprietary and
were developed either by a specific company or trade association. The same
is true of xml.org.

The American Heritage Dictionary has these definitions:

proprietary (pr-pr-tr) adj. Abbr. prop., pty. 1. Of or relating
to a proprietor or to proprietors as a group. 2. Exclusively owned; private.
3. Befitting an owner. 4. Owned by a private individual or corporation under
a trademark or patent.

standard adj. 1. Serving as or conforming to a standard of measurement or
value. 2. Widely recognized as a model of authority or excellence.

Rachel,

It's true we do not have a W3C Recommendation for schemas, but that's not
what determines whether a schema is proprietary or not.

You'll find there are hundreds of non-proprietary schemas in the registries
at www.biztalk.org and www.xml.org. Undoubtedly some of this will be updated
when the Candidate Recommendation is available, but conforming to the
Candidate Recommendation is not what determines whether a schema is
proprietary or not.
