If such enabling architecture techniques, etc. existed that truly enabled
interoperable automated XML-based document exchange such as that envisioned
by James there would be no need for the global efforts of the ebXML
Initiative, with well over 1,000 participants from all of the major national
and international standards bodies and all of the major and other ISV's and
individual companies working extremely hard and long hours to develop such a
global standard interoperable architecture and framework. The world of
electronic business would already have what it needs and would instead be
implementing and deploying rather than developing such a standard
architecture and framework.

Furthermore, neither would the likes of Microsoft, IBM and Ariba feel the
need to annouce this effort:

"IBM, Microsoft and Ariba are proposing to develop formats, protocols and
conventions necessary to maintain an online database that will enable
companies to divulge and discover the online business standards required to
streamline commerce and procedure to bring companies to the Net. Although
the directory will contain some human-readable information, it will
primarily support the system-to-system (S2S) domain. More information can be

The argument below is spurious. XML with schema supports value domain
specifications. It also supports tag specifications. XML with "enabling
architecture" techniques also allows automated trnslation between tag sets.
