Steve,

I'm confused because you've consistently taken a position that XML and
XML-based technologies have not delivered on promises. However, the example
below from Cisco was reported in November 2000 issue of eCompany. Even for
Cisco, one would assume $175 million is not a trivial savings.

Sprechen Sie XML?

"XML is also at the heart of Cisco's pioneering e-commerce system, which
processes the vast majority -- upwards of 85 percent -- of its customer
orders via the Internet. This in itself may not be remarkable, but consider
that Cisco does not stock any finished goods. Every single one of its
Internet routers and switches is built to order. That means information for
each order must be communicated electronically to not only its own
manufacturing plants but also its entire supply chain of distributors and
other assembly partners. With systems based on XML, this process takes a
matter of minutes, cutting product lead time from an average of four to six
weeks to two to three weeks. Cisco claims to save an estimated $175 million
annually from this project."
