Your document is not that large, but contains several hundred images. The image files are not very large because they are compressed using GIF, JPEG or PNG. But they are rendered on screen as uncompressed, 32-bit, rasters. That's why XXE needs more than 128Mb to render your document. Increasing the amount of memory allowed for Java as explained in http://www.xmlmind.com/xmleditor/user_faq.html#outofmemory will fix your problem. I also recommend to use the alternate style sheet "Images displayed as thumbnails" when working on such document.
