That's also my own preference. Either a paned window or two separate 
windows (the actual behavior) can be ok if the synchronization of both 
views is good enough, and both views can be jointly selected and deselected.

At present (xxe-std-25) I find that the selection in one view is well 
synchronized with the selection in the other one. But for the scroll 
there is a little difference. For instance, selecting 'preceding 
sibling' let the styled view to scroll if neccesary to show the begin of 
the new selected element, but in the tree view this element is now shown 
from the very beginning. And selecting 'following sibling' doesn't let 
the next element to be fully visible in either view.

As an additional proposal, I find very useful to have drag-and-drop 
capabilities in the tree view (the now free Morphon XML WYSIWYG editor 
has this feature).
