Every Wayland compositor I've seen relies on the kernel drivers for video
cards,
instead of trying to do them in user-space as XFree86 and the early

mainstream Linux & BSD kernels.
Right, Carsten explained it to me. I had a mental picture of equivalent of
Xserver doing mode setting calls and writing to registers, as I remember
it from way back.
