Is it the return of the libgnomecanvas bug? It sounds a lot like the 
display refresh bug that periodically comes up in libgnomecanvas, 
especially the OpenSUSE versions.

Try compiling different versions of libgnomecanvas (older, newer) and 
linking against those.
