I had a similar problem with the XFree86 server on Solaris. If you 
try different bit depths you'll get different background colours in 
the console (ranging from a freaky green to a really dark grey). If 
you use the VESA driver you'll not get the same gradual darkening 
each time you exit X. When I was using the trident driver it would 
gradually darken the background each time X was exited.

If you don't mind using XFree86 4.0.3 drivers you can use Sun's 
XFree86 porting kit. It allows you to run XFree86 drivers (4.0.3) 
under Sun's X server. There's also a source kit, which might allow 
you to recompile with 4.1.0 drivers, but I haven't tried that. I 
found with XSun the console is set to black text on a white 
background, and several other inconsistencies are resolved too. You 
can even use kdmconfig to choose XFree86 drivers. You can get the
