Doesn't seem to happen here.  It could be a kernel/X/APM interaction.

This is a long shot, but I've seen some trouble with the debugging
printouts enabled in that version of the virge driver.  Version 1.8.0 is
available on my web page for use with XFree86 4.1.0.  (It has the
debugging printouts I'm referring to disabled by default, plus some
other fixes.)
