Does the whole box freeze, or can you still move the mouse, ssh in and
kill the X client and/or server? If the former, I wonder if this could
be related to the infamous 'Athlon bug'?

Also, it might be interesting if you could try the current DRI CVS trunk
(all of it, not just the DRM). It's still pre-4.2 but the DRI code has
been developed further.
