You should be able to restart X, but you won't get the console back
unless you use a real framebuffer device or reboot.

Could you please also try booting the kernel with mem=nopentium, which
is a workaround for the problem related to Athlon speculative writes and
AGP GART cache coherency, to see if that's related?
