X doesn't care whether you talk to it over TCP/IP, UNIX domain sockets,
DECnet, or a wet noodle and two tin cans, so long as the bytes go back
and forth.
If you run the xdpyinfo program, you'll see a list of X extensions
your server supports. Look for "RENDER" in the list.
And yes, 4.x will run on Linux 2.2.19. Whether your graphics card is
supported under 4.x is a different question. Render is not available
in XFree86 3.x.
