Rich, Toshiba laptops have an option for that in the BIOS.
To access the bios, press ESC during startup (just when you see the red Toshiba logo) and then press F1 to access the BIOS. You can change the video output from "Autoselect" to "External" or "Both". I guess "both" is what you want since you can plug a video projector when you need it while keeping the LCD active. Press "END" to save and exit setup.
