1. How can I get the external monitor running at 1600 x 1200?

Steve,

Your XFree86.0.log file says:

(II) R128(0): Not using default mode "1600x1200" (no mode of this name)
(II) R128(0): Not using default mode "1600x1200" (no mode of this name)

(II) R128(0): Not using mode "1600x1200" (no mode of this name)
(--) R128(0): Virtual size is 1400x1050 (pitch 1408)
(**) R128(0): Default mode "1400x1050": 108.0 MHz, 72.3 kHz, 67.8 Hz

This would indicate that there is no mode named "1600x1200" for the
device identified in the Section "Monitor" Identifier "DELL 2000FP"
found in your XF86config-4 file. Is this the monitor specification for
the laptop? There is only one monitor specified in the Section. Don't
quote me on this, but I believe there should be an Identifier for your
second monitor as well so that this monitor can be specified in a Screen
section of it's own. Right now you have a Section "Screen" Identifier
"Screen0" that is using Monitor "DELL 2000FP" from your Section
"Monitor." If you define a second monitor you can define a second
screen "Screen1" for the other monitor.

It appears that the highest resolution found is 1400x1050 which is being
used as the default.

Before you start X both monitors will be running in VGA text mode. This
is the default unless you set your machine to start in graphical login mode.

Any one else have more to add to this discussion? Feel free to correct
me if I'm wrong here.
