Mike

This is good info info, but we still don't quite get to it do we? OK I
understand XFree86 3.3.6 is only working solution out of the RPM as it were.

But as I understand it, from the documentation, Dr Atchison and yourself
cyrix_drv and XF86_SVGA are part of 3.3.x so..... why does XF86_SVGA
-probeonly produce the error:

  Driver "cyrix"
   ^^^^^
Unknown section keyword

Am I being exceptionally stupid? The contradiction is this: Driver "cyrix"
is recognized by XFree86 4.. but it don't work. XF86_SVGA version 3... does
wok but not above 640x480 and not requiring the driver!

What I think is this; XF86_SVGA is indeed version 3. but it is not this that
supports cyrix svga modes and acceleration, it is in fact only XFree86
version 3 that does and using using cyrex_drv.

Could somebody confirm this please?

If true RedHat or whoever should not distribute the driver cyrix_drv with
XFree86 4 and xfree86.org should remove documentation stating XF86_SVGA and
Device "cyrix" is the way to get mediagx chip sets to work. Why because its
very very very CONFUSING!!

Are the problem with XFree86 4 and cyrix_drv to do with cyrix_driv? If so
where can I obtain the source so that I can have a look at it. I've looked
in my RedHat distributions and on xfree86.org but, I cannot detect it any
where.

On the other hand if to do with XFree86 itself then I concede, the problem
is probably beyond me and I will just have to roll back to 3.3.6

Is 3.3.6 available as binary RPM ? I have the source, but am a little
nervous of installing over a newer version. I suppose I could always resort
to RH 6

Thank you
