I'll add to the historical comments by mentioning that OpenGL was being
supported by Microsoft (at the time, anyway).  PEX was tightly
integrated with X, making it impractical in the low cost PC environment
of the time.

key issue that decided the OpenGL vs PEX war.  I'm sure you'll get many
other perspectives from the OpenGL camp.  Isn't there a saying how the
victor get's to write the history books?

That said, I'm glad to support OpenGL.  It has much better integration
with X than Direct3D :-)
