Hmm - how meta is that ;-) Seriously, IIRC, GGI allowed something like this. I distinctly remember seeing a demo with a cube that had six different WMs on each of its sides. GGI had the problem of being slow (well, unaccelerated anyway) and kernel-version dependent, though.
