Barring that, what about asking the original authors. A lot of the original code is used. Probably about 90-95%. As for asking the original authors, no I haven't. I doubt very much the original authors would change it now.

It's not a hassle at all. The vnc module is pretty well separated from the rest of XFree86 anyway.
