No, you should be getting the launchd socket (unless you disabled it).  eg:

$ echo $DISPLAY
/tmp/launch-9TtiXW/org.macosforge.xquartz:0

I'm not really sure what's "cryptic" about that.  It's a path to a socket which 
is certainly less cryptic than :0.0
