I've framed things that had two whole threads between the stitching and the
edge (#*$@!! cheap kits anyway). In that case, I couldn't lace and stretch
the fabric (which is the point of the 3-4 inches), so merely taped the fabric
to the back of the mat.
If you have 1/2 inch seam allowance on each side, you could make it into a
pillow.
