Looks like gwenview is the way to go. It's KDE-centric but works well
"apt install gwenview" wants to install 115 packages!
This is way too much for a simple image viewer.
Well, if you want something lean, maybe imagemagick? - Opens from the
command line and has mouse navigation. Can do everything you demand -
and quite a lot besides that... Probably already installed on your
system. In a terminal window just: 'display xxx.jpg' or in the current
directory: 'display *.jpg'.
